The queen of Ifé in Africa is the Virgin of Regla
beneath the waves. In an altar piece the goddess is enthroned in aquatic glory. Two fish rest upon her skirt; a third fish is cradled in her arms like the infant Jesus. Two fish flank her head like underwater angels. Coral states her wealth. Leopard dots are the seal of mobility and appear as air bubbles. Exhibited at the Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH. |
